  • Hi, I see you undid my edit regarding the tenses on Finn's page, which is fine I just have a small question regarding it. With many of the other pages including¬†Lexa, Lincoln, and Maya the lead is written in the past tense so I'm a tad curious why we wouldn't do the same for Finn, since he like those character was alive but is now deceased.

    • Lexa, Lincoln, and Maya should NOT be written in the past tense, either. Someone went through and changed those.

From our Style Guide: "If a character dies in the show, the tense does not need to be retroactively changed (i.e. Finn Collins)."

    • Alright, I'll go modify them to present tense if that's alright. Thanks for clarifying.

      Can you clarify this point?

The Style Guide also states, that we should use "past tense when referring to Deceased Character articles". Does that mean that articles tense should be determined by the character initial status (dead or alive)? So for example will you be undoing past tense contributions to Finn because he used to be alive?

IMO this seem to have a lot of potential for confusion and messing up the articles. Maybe the articles don't need to be updated, but the could be if Amethystkitten is willing to review\update them whole?

    • The confusion occurs when people make edits without reading the Style Guide. Pre-deceased characters are written in past tense since they only appear in flashbacks. Characters who appear alive in episodes are written in present tense. Just because a character dies does not mean they weren't alive during those episodes and/or events. That doesn't change and nor should the page. If you have a problem with it, then bring it up in the Suggestions forum.

    • I am asking because I have encountered similar issues in the past and find the guideline confusing.

This makes sense but only covers the 'Throughout the Series' sections, what about 'Early History' and the 'lead' sections (those are the ones I worked on). Should we say:

      • "Finn is born on the Ark" but "Becca was born on the Ark"
      • "Charlotte is a minor character" but "Becca was a minor character"

Because the later only showed in flashbacks?

I am hopping that this can be clarified a little bit for the benefit of people who are undamiliar with this, such as as myself.

    • Becca was dead before the start of the show. Charlotte and Finn were not.

    • I assume that include locations e.g.

      • "Alpha station is space station", but "Polaris was a space station".

So the rule of the thumb would be: always write in the present tense (in/out of universe), unless the subject only appeared in a flashback.

Personally, I am used to in-universe past tense only wikis, and the above inconsistency irks me, But i'll try to match that when ever I am conscious of it.

      Thanks for clarifying.
