You were right, Clarke. Life is about more than just surviving.
— Her final words in Thirteen

Lexa was a recurring character in the second and third seasons. She was portrayed by cast member Alycia Debnam-Carey and debuted in "Fog of War".

As the Commander, Lexa had formed the Coalition, uniting the twelve Grounder Clans in a war against the Mountain Men.

Lexa's Coalition became involved in a series of conflicts with the Sky People, after the latter group landed in the Coalition's territory. Tensions between the two sides escalated and after the massacre in Tondc, Lexa demanded that the Sky People leave her territory or die. Clarke Griffin instead offered a way to save both of their people imprisoned within the Mountain Men's fortress, Mount Weather, and Lexa agreed to a truce on the condition of Finn Collins's death in compensation for the massacre.

With their new-found alliance, Lexa and Clarke started working closely to free their people from Mount Weather. They grew closer and Lexa admitted to having romantic feelings for Clarke, though Clarke was not yet ready for a relationship. The alliance successfully took down Mount Weather's defenses, but before Lexa's army could attack, Cage Wallace offered Lexa a deal that ensured all of Lexa's people would be freed. In return, Lexa's army would have to retreat and never encroach upon the Mountain again. Lexa took the deal, saving her people but leaving Clarke and the rest of the Sky People to die in Mount Weather. After Clarke was forced to irradiate Mount Weather, the deaths of all the Mountain Men and Clarke's post-traumatic stress causes her to hate Lexa for her betrayal and for endangering Clarke's people.

Months after her betrayal, Lexa found herself struggling to maintain control over the Coalition; her rule being challenged first by Queen Nia of the Ice Nation, and then by Pike's faction of the Sky People. She also had Clarke brought to her in Polis amid the political turmoil. As Lexa worked to bring peace to the clans, Clarke forgave her and they became allies again and later lovers. Lexa's Flamekeeper, Titus, disapproved of their relationship and during an attempt to kill Clarke, shot Lexa by accident instead. Despite Clarke's desperate attempts to save her, Lexa died from her wound.

As with all of the Commanders before her, Lexa's consciousness continued to live on in the Flame upon her physical death. When Clarke took the Flame to destroy A.L.I.E. in the City of Light, her mind summoned Lexa's consciousness to aid her. Lexa protected Clarke from A.L.I.E.'s Cult, and Clarke declared her love for Lexa before they parted ways. Lexa's consciousness survived the fight against A.L.I.E. and remained within the Flame, later advising Madi Griffin, the new Commander and Clarke's adopted daughter, based off of her own experiences with Clarke. It was Lexa's advice from beyond the grave that convinced Clarke to let Madi lead Wonkru in the Battle for Eden.

Raven Reyes was later forced to delete the Flame's data to save Madi from Sheidheda. Even without the Flame, fragments of previous Commanders' memories, including Lexa's, were shown to have remained in Madi's mind. Eventually, the Flame was physically destroyed by Gabriel Santiago after an aborted attempt to fix it, taking with it the minds of the Commanders still stored inside.

When Clarke took the final test to determine the fate of the human race, the Judge took on the form of Lexa because she was Clarke's greatest love[1].

Early Life[]

PromoLexaThrone 2x07

First Commander of the Coalition

Lexa grew up with the Woods Clan and began her warrior training at the age of two.[2] She was born a Nightblood and was, as is tradition, brought to Polis as a child to be groomed as a potential successor to the Commander. She was mentored by Flamekeeper Titus and later served as Anya's Second[3].

When she was 12, the previous Commander died and Lexa was called to attend the Conclave. In doing so, she stopped her training with Anya in order to take on the responsibilities required by her position.[4] Lexa won the Conclave after seven other Nightbloods were killed and Luna had fled. She was given the Flame and ascended as the new Commander.

At some point, Lexa began a relationship with a Grounder named Costia. The Ice Nation, led by Queen Nia, kidnapped, tortured and beheaded Costia to learn Lexa's secrets. They then delivered Costia's head to Lexa's own bed. Costia's death caused Lexa to trust no one and to believe that love is weakness.

As Commander, Lexa united the 12 Grounder Clans and formed the Coalition, thus becoming the first Commander to rule over all 12 Clans[5][6]. Despite what the Ice Nation did to Costia, Lexa still allowed them to join her Coalition on the condition that Nia's eldest son Roan was banished[7].

One of the laws that Lexa introduced as Commander was to ensure that a unanimous vote of no confidence by the Ambassadors of the Coalition or death were all that could remove a Commander from power.

Throughout the Series[]

In We Are Grounders (Part 1), Tristan arrives and takes over Anya's unit under the orders of the Commander, later revealed to be Lexa.

In The 48, while hunting the surviving delinquents, Tristan tells Finn Collins that he needs to take one of them alive to the Commander. However, Tristan is killed by Marcus Kane before he can succeed.

In Reapercussions, Kane sets off on a diplomatic mission to make contact with the Commander and negotiate for peace.

In Many Happy Returns, Anya holds Clarke as her prisoner, intending to bring her to the Commander so that Clarke can explain what the Mountain Men are doing to their people in Mount Weather. Anya thinks that they can get an audience with the Commander because the Commander used to be her second. Meanwhile, the Commander has put out a bounty on all Sky People which leads to Thelonious Jaha's capture.

In Human Trials, one of Kane's guards questions if they are really being led to the Commander or if it is a trap. It turns out to be a trap and Kane is captured.

In Fog of War, Kane and Jaha are both trapped in a Grounder prison. Jaha tells Kane that their time isn't up yet because they still have work to do. Gustus enters with some warriors and they start to beat up Jaha. Kane tells them they came in peace. Gustus tells them about the massacre in Tondc and says that "Blood must have blood." He leaves behind a dagger and tells them that one of them will die by the other's hand and only then will he hear the terms of their surrender. He leaves behind a girl, Lexa, to make sure the deed is done. Lexa tells them that if they refuse, the Commander will use the knife to slit both of their throats.

Fog of War 024 (Lexa)

Lexa waits for Kane and Jaha to fight to the death

Kane and Jaha discuss the difference between murder and sacrifice as they decide whether to follow Gustus' orders or not. Kane picks up the dagger and offers it to Jaha, telling Jaha to kill him but Jaha refuses. Kane then cuts his own forearm and Jaha begs Lexa to help him. Lexa tosses him a bandage before Jaha takes her as a hostage. Gustus and the guards enter where Jaha is holding Lexa hostage. Lexa then takes out Jaha and holds the knife against his throat before revealing that she is, in fact, the Commander. She says that she believes that their wish for peace is sincere, but that Jaha will be used to send a message and they drag Jaha away because "the massacre must be answered. Blood must have blood." Lexa orders to have Jaha taken away and for Kane remain locked in his cell. Jaha is returned to Camp Jaha and tells them he has a message from the Commander: "leave or die. We have two days."

In Long Into an Abyss, Abigail Griffin and Jaha are discussing their options of what to do about the Commander's ultimatum. Abby wants to rescue the kids in Mount Weather but Jaha wants to flee. Abby tells everyone at Camp Jaha that yes, the Grounders have threatened them but they haven't made any decisions yet. Abby tells everyone that no decision has been made yet and they should all report to their station supervisors.Later at Camp Jaha, everyone is preparing to evacuate when Clarke arrives and tells Abby that she knows how to stop the Grounder threat. In the distance, lights start to appear in the darkness of the night and everyone realizes the Grounder army has arrived. Abby then decides to head back to the drop ship to save Lincoln while Clarke goes to talk to the Commander.

Lexa meets Clarke

Clarke approaches the Grounder camp outside Camp Jaha and is stopped by Gustus who warns her he'll slit her throat at the slightest provocation. Clarke enters the Commander's tent and meets Lexa, who is seated on a throne with Indra on one side. Clarke tells Lexa about Mount Weather and about how she and Anya escaped together and presents Lexa with a braid from Anya's hair. Clarke lies that they can turn the Reapers back into Grounders because she's done it with Lincoln. Lexa demands Clarke prove it.

Clarke leads Lexa and her guard through the carnage outside the drop ship while Abby is trying to get Lincoln to breathe again. Abby finally gives up and says that Lincoln is gone. Octavia refuses to believe her and continues chest compressions. Clarke and everyone else enters at that moment and they are at a standstill with everyone going for their weapons. Abby picks up the shock baton and holds it in front of her before using it as a defibrillator on Lincoln, shocking him twice before he starts breathing again, much to the Grounders' surprise and the Sky Peoples' relief. Later, when Clarke is back with Lexa in her tent outside Camp Jaha, Lexa tells Clarke that she's willing to have a truce as soon as Finn dies.

In Spacewalker, Clarke arrives at Camp Jaha after speaking with Lexa, who had ordered Finn's death for the massacre of Tondc before their truce with the Sky People can begin. Most of the Sky People want to give Finn up to the Grounders, especially because he wasted three months of oxygen on The Ark for the spacewalk that got him imprisoned.

Later, Clarke visits with Lincoln who is recovering from being a Reaper. Abby asks Lincoln how to negotiate with Lexa in order to save Finn but he says there is no way out of it and Finn must die. Octavia asks what would happen to him and Lincoln tells them that because Finn killed 18, he will suffer 18 deaths as a result. They then hear the Grounders chanting loudly, "Jus drein jus daun!" ("Blood must have blood!"). Abby walks up to the gate to talk to the two riders Lexa left behind and tells them the Sky People are ready to fight if that is what it comes to. The riders take off back to Lexa's camp and they see someone else approaching: Marcus Kane. Kane and Abby go to talk with Lincoln again and ask if Lexa would be willing to accept a deal where the Sky People put Finn on trial instead. Lincoln tells them it's not possible because Finn killed innocent people and they're already lucky because if it were up to Indra, all of the Sky People would be dead.

At the dropship, Clarke, Raven, Bellamy, and Murphy are trying to save Finn from the Grounders' justice. Bellamy shouts a warning to them that the Grounders have arrived and they're surrounded. Finn tells them they need to stay and defend the drop ship. He then climbs out the bottom of the drop ship. Clarke, Raven, and Bellamy are watching the front gate when they see Finn step out in front of them and surrender himself to the Grounders.

Back at Camp Jaha, Clarke, Raven, Bellamy, and the rest of the Sky People watch as the Grounders start setting up for Finn's execution. Abby says there is nothing to be done. Clarke, Raven, and Bellamy then meet up at Raven's Gate where Raven gives Clarke a knife so Clarke can kill Lexa because Raven owes Finn her life. Clarke approaches Lexa's tent and Indra stops her with a spear. Clarke presses against the spear, drawing blood. Lexa tells Indra to let Clarke through. Clarke begs Lexa to show how powerful she is by having mercy and that Finn killed those people for her. Lexa tells Clarke that Finn will die for her, then. Clarke asks if she can say goodbye and Lexa allows her to. Clarke walks over to Finn and hugs him, telling him she loves him and that he will be okay. He says, "thanks, Princess" and she steps away from him to reveal that she had killed him with the knife Raven gave her. Lexa tells her warriors that it is done and keeps them from attacking.

In Remember Me, Lexa tells Clarke that Finn's body will be given to the people of Tondc since Clarke denied them their justice. Kane and Abby get into a disagreement with Indra over this but Clarke agrees to it. She says once it's done, they will then talk about getting all of their people, both Sky People and Grounders, out of Mount Weather. Clarke tells Abby that if the truce doesn't hold, then she killed Finn for nothing and walks away. Abby tells Kane that the Grounders are being led by a child and he tells her, "so are we."

On the journey from Camp Jaha to Tondc, Lexa, and Gustus are riding on horses and discussing the alliance in Trigedasleng. Gustus doesn't think it's a good idea, as the Sky People are more like Mountain Men and he is worried for her safety. Lexa just tells him to do his job and protect her. They arrive at Tondc the next day and everyone has to disarm before entering. Raven stubbornly forces Gustus to search her and disarm her. As they enter the village, Grounders shout at the Sky People, calling them murderers. One man stands in their way because he lost both his wife and child. Gustus fights the man and is about to kill him when Clarke begs Lexa to stop him so the Sky People won't get blamed. Lexa calls it off and announces to everyone that if anyone tries to stop the alliance, they will pay with their life.

Remember Me 045 (Clarke and Lexa)

Clarke and Lexa at the funeral for the victims of the massacre

Lexa gives a eulogy for the dead in front of a funeral pyre. She then passes the torch to Clarke who steps up and as she lights the pyre guided by Finn's hand, she says, "yu gonplei ste odon" ("your fight is over"), much to Indra's and Nyko's surprise. Later, Lexa and Clarke stand over the ashes of the funeral pyre as Lexa tells Clarke about Costia, who was captured by the Ice Queen because she belonged to Lexa. They tortured her and cut off her head because they thought she might know Lexa's secrets. She got over the pain by recognizing that love is weakness. If Clarke doesn't do the same, then she puts the people she cares about in danger and the pain will never go away.

Later, at the alliance banquet, Kane brings forward some liquor to share. Clarke and Lexa both take a goblet but Gustus stops Lexa and takes a sip first before giving it back to her. As they toast and are about to take a sip, Gustus falls over having been poisoned. The Sky People are searched and they find the poison on Raven. She claims it is not hers and that Gustus put it there when he searched her. Lexa commands for all of the Sky People to be locked up. Octavia asks Lincoln to do something and Lincoln asks Indra to let him speak for the Sky People. Indra tells Lincoln he is one of them before locking them all up.

Remember Me 090 (Lexa and Gustus)

Lexa prepares to execute Gustus

Clarke asks Raven if she really had tried to poison Lexa and Raven punches Clarke in the face. Kane goes over to talk to Clarke and tells her that they need to figure out who would want Lexa dead. They come to the conclusion that the poisoner had to be someone who was trying to break the alliance. Nyko and Indra return and take Raven away. Indra tells them that Lexa is merciful and only wants Raven to die. The rest of them are free and they should run. Raven is then tied up outside to a pole where Lexa and Indra begin the Death by a Thousand Cuts. Clarke realizes the poison wasn't in the bottle; it was in the cup. She runs outside and asks Nyko for the bottle and drinks from it, showing it wasn't poisoned. Bellamy realizes that it was Gustus who poisoned the cup because he was trying to protect Lexa from the alliance. Lexa commands him to be tied up in Raven's place. At the end of Gustus' Death of a Thousand Cuts, Lexa approaches and Gustus tells her to be strong. She says, "Yu gonplei ste odon," as she delivers the final blow straight through his heart.

In Survival of the Fittest, Lexa and Clarke are back in Tondc, planning a way to get both of their people out of Mount Weather. Quint gets argumentative with Clarke before storming off saying he can't be in an alliance with the Sky People. Lexa tells Clarke that waiting for Bellamy to get into Mount Weather is a prayer, not a plan. Clarke excuses herself for some fresh air and Major Byrne follows after.

Clarke is wandering around outside when she spots Quint tracking her. He starts to taunt her and shoots arrows at her as she runs. Clarke pauses while running from Quint and sees Byrne whose arm has been ripped off. Byrne tells Clarke to save herself. Clarke is running through the woods when she is attacked by Quint. Lexa comes up and tells Clarke she can kill Quint when they hear a loud roar. Lexa says it's "Pauna" and slices Quint's leg while telling Clarke to run. The Pauna (a giant mutant gorilla) attacks Quint while Clarke, Lexa, and her guard look for a place to hide. They quickly realize their hiding place is actually the feeding ground of the Pauna when she leaps over and attacks and kills their guard. Clarke shoots at the Pauna but the bullets don't stop her and she chases after Clarke and Lexa, causing Lexa to injure herself. The Pauna grabs hold of Lexa and Clarke refuses to leave Lexa behind, saving her life even as they trap themselves into a room.

Survival of the Fittest 046 (Clarke and Lexa)

Lexa and Clarke face the Pauna

Lexa tells Clarke that she's being weak by helping her escape the Pauna. Clarke tells Lexa that she needs her because she's smart. The Pauna finds them and begins beating against the door. Clarke has Lexa stand on one side of the door while the let the Pauna charge in and then race out the door, shutting it behind them and trapping the Pauna in the room. Later that night, Clarke awakens to find Lexa watching over her in the woods. The Pauna is still trapped and they are safe as long as the cage holds. This gives Clarke the idea of using all the caged Grounders trapped in Mount Weather as an army as long as Bellamy can get inside and release them.

In Coup de Grâce, photographs of her and Clarke are retrieved from some Mountain Men who were sent as assassins.

In Rubicon, Clarke rides into Tondc and tells Octavia to take her to Lexa. In the woods outside Tondc, a Mountain Man (Whitman) reports back to Mount Weather that Clarke has arrived. Clarke and Lexa go someplace private and Clarke tells Lexa about the missile headed for Tondc. Lexa tells Clarke that they can't tell anyone about the missile because then Mount Weather will know they were warned ahead of time. Clarke wants to warn everyone but Lexa tells her that if she really did, then she would have done so before telling Lexa about the missile. Lexa and Clarke then leave. As they are sneaking out of Tondc, Clarke hesitates and tells Lexa they should find the spotter. She suddenly sees her mom in Tondc and goes back for her. Clarke gets Abby to leave with her while Kane and Indra realize Clarke and Lexa have gone missing. The missile lands on Tondc causing a massive explosion that knocks Clarke and Abby off their feet. Clarke's ears are ringing as she checks on her mom, telling her they have to go. Abby realizes that Clarke knew about the missile ahead of time and can't believe that Clarke would let it happen. She begs Clarke to tell her it was Lexa and it wasn't Clarke who did it, telling her she crossed a line but her secret is safe. Abby leaves in disgust and sadness and heads back into Tondc.

In Resurrection, after the missile explodes on Tondc, Lexa grabs Clarke and shakes her to attention, telling her, "victory stands on the back of sacrifice." Clarke states that she wants all of the Mountain Men dead. Clarke tells Lexa that the spotter is the one who is shooting at the survivors and that she's going to find him and kill him. They begin hiking around Tondc as they look for the sniper, Whitman. Lexa keeps trying to convince Clarke that she did the right thing. They hear a noise ahead of them and run into Lincoln who is also going after the sniper.

Resurrection 008 (Lexa)

Clarke and Lexa look for the sniper

Lincoln is shocked to see both Clarke and Lexa are safe and not in Tondc. He goes with them as they search for the sniper. They start looking for Whitman on higher ground but he spots them first and fires at them. Clarke draws his fire while Lincoln sneaks up on him and attacks Whitman. The sniper uses a tone generator to incapacitate him and holds Lincoln hostage with a knife while pointing a gun at Clarke. Lincoln tells Clarke to let Whitman kill him and then shoot Whitman because her people need her. Clarke replies, "You are my people," and kills the sniper in one shot through Lincoln's shoulder.

Lincoln returns with Clarke and Lexa and reunites with Octavia. Lexa starts to give a speech about making the Mountain fall and avenging the dead when Abby interrupts and tells them there are still others who need saving and to get back to work. Later, Clarke and Lexa leave for Mount Weather with Octavia, Lincoln, Indra, and the rest of their army.

Clarke-Lexa-2x14-1

Clarke and Lexa discuss Octavia

In Bodyguard of Lies, in the Grounder camp outside Mount Weather, Clarke is stressing over the battle plans and Lexa tells her she should rest because she is wasting her energy. Clarke worries over whether or not Bellamy will be successful and Lexa tells her that's what it means to be a leader. Lexa tells her she was born to be a leader, just like her. Later outside, Clarke approaches Octavia across from a campfire. Octavia confronts Clarke about the bombing of Tondc and asks Clarke to tell her she didn't know it was coming. Clarke tells her she did it to save Bellamy and Octavia tells her that Bellamy would have never agreed to it and would have found another way. Clarke tells Octavia she cannot tell anyone and Octavia says she knows; the alliance would break. They are then interrupted by Lexa and Ryder, one of her warriors. Ryder tells Octavia to go relieve the southernmost guard position. Octavia tells them Indra expects her to be on a scouting mission with Lincoln. Ryder tells her that Indra will join her there shortly and Octavia walks off. Clarke tells Lexa that Octavia won't say anything and Lexa says she can't be sure of that. After Clarke leaves, Lexa tells Ryder to kill Octavia.

Clarke spots Indra seated near a fire and asks her why she is not on watch with Octavia. Indra tells her she doesn't stand watch and Clarke then asks where Octavia is. Indra tells her that she is with Lincoln, scouting as planned. Clarke then heads off to find Octavia and spots Ryder with an arrow aimed at Octavia. Clarke points her gun at his head and tells him to stand down and come with her and she leads him away from Octavia. Clarke brings Ryder back to Lexa and tells her that Octavia is not a problem. Lexa tells Ryder to stand down and sends him away. Clarke tells Lexa she can't kill anyone she doesn't trust. Lexa says yes, she can. She calls Octavia a threat and Clarke tells her that Octavia wouldn't ever endanger her brother's life. She then tells Lexa that she's a liar and really does have feelings, about Gustus, about Costia, and about the people who burned in Tondc. Lexa tells Clarke that she didn't let her burn. Clarke asks for Lexa to trust her that Octavia is not a threat and then warns Lexa that if she does anything to Octavia, Clarke will tell everyone about the missile.

PromoLexaClarke 2x14

Clarke and Lexa see the flare

Later, Lexa summons Clarke to her tent to tell her that Octavia has nothing to fear from Lexa because Lexa trusts Clarke. Lexa tells her that their ways may be harsh but it is how they survive. Clarke asks if maybe they deserve more out of life than just surviving and Lexa kisses Clarke. Clarke returns the kiss before breaking away, telling Lexa that she is not ready to be with anyone. The Grounders then raise the alert that a flare has been spotted and they prepare for battle. Lexa tells them to sound the horn and announces they are going to war.

In Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1), Clarke and Lexa are in their Command Post tent with their military leaders when Monroe and Sgt. Miller arrive and Sgt. Miller gives her a package of hydrazine from Raven. Abby is not there because she stayed behind to help the wounded from the bombing in Tondc. Lexa and Clarke then begin to discuss the action plan and Clarke makes it clear that it is supposed to be a rescue mission and that they do not want to wipe out the Mountain Men. Clarke explains how there are four teams: one at the dam (Raven and Wick), one in the mines (Indra and Octavia), one inside the mountain (Bellamy and the caged Grounders), and Clarke's team who will take the front door. Clarke has found out from Maya that the main door has a flaw if the power goes out. Raven and Wick will take out the power coming from the dam, causing a one-minute delay before the backup generator kicks in. This gives them one minute to blow the lock on the door. The reason they don't also want to blow the backup generator is because it would leave the Mountain Men without power for too long, killing them all. Clarke then admits that they've lost contact with Bellamy after he blew up the Acid Fog machine. She goes on to tell them that once they get the door open, they will be under heavy fire from Mount Weather and that's what they want. While they're distracting the Mount Weather Guards, Indra and Octavia will be getting the Grounders and Delinquents out the back door and through the Reaper tunnels. Lexa then gives an encouraging speech, ending in the chant of "Jus drein, jus daun." All of the Grounders chant after her.

At Mount Weather's front door, Monroe drills a hole into it so Sgt. Miller can insert the hydrazine bomb to blow the lock. Lincoln follows him to provide protection in case any of the Mountain Men try taking any shots. Sgt. Miller's hands start to shake as he tries to insert the bomb and Lincoln tells him to do it for his son. Sgt. Miller replies that the Mountain has taken enough from both of them and steadily inserts the bomb. Clarke and Lexa then wait for the power to go out. Lexa invites Clarke to their Capitol, Polis, telling her it will make her change the way she thinks about the Grounders. Clarke tells Lexa that she already has. They soon hear gunfire coming from the dam and get ready to blow the door.

In Mount Weather, the power goes out all over the place and Cage Wallace tells Emerson over radio to start the clock for one minute. Emerson tells Cage he's not letting them get near the door. When the light over the door goes off, Sgt. Miller tells Clarke they have one minute to blow the lock. Clarke and Lexa hold the trigger and press the button together but nothing happens. Clarke realizes that Mount Weather is jamming the trigger signal and says she has to get closer. As she starts to approach the door, gunfire rains down from above and Lincoln grabs her to safety. Emerson and his men shoot at them from the ridge above the door, preventing them from getting close to the door. A group of Grounders create a shield to take Sgt. Miller to the door so he can trigger it manually. They are all shot down before they can make it. They only have a few seconds left when Lincoln comes up with the idea to use a flaming arrow to trigger the bomb on the door. He makes the shot with only a second to spare and the lock is blown. Lexa tells Lincoln to remain with Clarke while she takes a group up the ridge to take down Emerson's contingent so they can work on getting the door open. After the shooting has stopped, Lincoln commands the other Grounders to start hooking lines onto the door so they can pull it open. As the door creaks open, Clarke gives the command to attack just as Lexa interrupts, telling them all to stand down.

PromoLexa 2x15

Lexa tells Clarke she agreed to a truce with the Mountain Men

Lexa arrives from the ridge, towing Emerson along just as through the open door, harvested Grounders start stumbling out. Clarke asks if that means they surrendered and Emerson says, "not quite." Clarke asks Lexa what she did and Lexa tells her she saved her people but Clarke's people were not part of the deal. Emerson then heads back inside Mount Weather as Echo and the last of the Grounders are released. Lincoln asks Clarke what is going on and Clarke tells him what Lexa did. Lexa tells Lincoln the deal is done and orders the retreat to be sounded. Lincoln refuses to retreat and Lexa has him restrained. She then turns to Clarke and says, "may we meet again," before leaving with her army.

In Wanheda (Part 2), Lexa rises from her throne in the Polis tower, flanked by Indra and Titus. Roan enters the room and presents Wanheda, a.k.a. Clarke, to her. Lexa is annoyed with the fact that Clarke is hurt, stating that she wanted Clarke brought to her unharmed. Roan explains that she didn't make it easy for him, and Lexa admits she didn't expect anything else. He demands that Lexa does her end of the deal and lift his banishment, but she refuses because his mother's, Queen Nia, army is marching on Polis. Roan tells her that isn't her fault, but Lexa says that she will only honor their deal when his mother honors her Coalition She orders the guards to lock Prince Roan up, and tells Indra and Titus to leave her alone with Clarke, which they do but with much reluctance and hesitation. Lexa frees Clarke from her binds and apologizes, saying that she didn't want it to be like this but had to find her before the Ice Nation could. She then tells Clarke that war is brewing and she needs her help. Clarke is infuriated and spits on Lexa. The guards drag Clarke away as she screams "You wanted the Commander of Death, you got her!" and death threats. Lexa wipes the spit off of her face and walks out onto the balcony of her tower.

TitusLexaThronePolis

Lexa on her throne in Polis

In Ye Who Enter Here, Lexa confronts Clarke a week after the events of the prior episodes. Clarke says she doesn't want to see her, however, with the Ice Nation threatening the Coalition Lexa stresses that they have more important matters to discuss. Lexa has a meeting with Marcus Kane and Abigail Griffin about having the Sky People join her Coalition as the thirteenth clan. In order for the Sky People to become a member Clarke has to bow to Lexa, which she refuses to do and instead says that if Lexa wants the power of Wanheda, she should kill her. After Lexa's conversation with Clarke, she goes to meet the delegates from the other twelve clans. The delegate from the Ice Nation refuses to bow to Lexa when she walks in, questioning why Wanheda is not dead yet. He goes on to say that if it is Lexa's weakness preventing her from killing Wanheda, the Ice Nation would gladly step in again (referring to the Ice Nation's capture and murder of Costia). Lexa tells the delegate that she has a message for Nia and wants to speak to him in private. When he walks over, she kicks him off the tower to his death and turns to ask if any of the other delegates have any objections.

Lexa is later seen sparring with one of the Nightblood children, a boy named Aden. During their match, he is successful in blocking her attacks, which she praises him for before pushing him back and restarting the match. In the second round, Aden is still successful in blocking her attacks and even counters with a backhand to the face when Lexa pins his sword down. This is met with silence before Titus dismisses the Nightbloods to spar amongst themselves so he may talk to Lexa. Lexa tells him that Aden is ready and is a better fighter than she was before her Conclave. Titus then speaks to her about Clarke, voicing his concerns, Lexa's response is that Clarke is special. Titus insists that Lexa should kill her and seize her power.

ClarkeThreatensLexa

Clarke pulls a knife on Lexa

Lexa goes to Clarke's room when Clarke summons her and when Lexa gets close Clarke pulls a knife on her and presses it to her throat. Instead of fighting back, Lexa says that she is sorry that she turned Clarke into who she has become. Clarke drops the knife and Lexa tells her that she's free to go, deciding to no longer ask anything of her. As Lexa starts to leave, Clarke calls her back, agreeing to have the Sky People join the Coalition. During the ceremony, Bellamy Blake, Octavia Blake, and Charles Pike storm in under the idea that the summit is a trap from Echo. Lexa has the Ice Nation delegates and Roan arrested and says that Sky People and Woods Clan will combat the threat together. After a war meeting, Lexa and Clarke have a moment. Lexa promises not to betray Clarke again, bowing to her and giving herself to Clarke only rising once Clarke offers her hand.

In Watch the Thrones, Lexa has Queen Nia brought to her to face judgment after her admitting to the destruction of Mount Weather. Before the Queen can be sent to her death, she calls a vote of no confidence in an attempt to dethrone Lexa. All the ambassadors, except Clarke, vote in favor of dethroning Lexa and she is forced into a death match. Queen Nia chooses Roan to fight for her while Lexa states that no one fights for her and she will fight herself.

Before the fight Lexa speaks with the Nightbloods, going over with them about the qualities they need to become Commander. After the Nightbloods are dismissed she introduces Clarke to Aden, who she claims is the most promising of the Nightbloods and thereby most likely to succeed her if she dies in her fight with Roan. After making Aden promise his loyalty to Clarke's people Lexa dismisses him. Clarke and Lexa argue about Lexa's participation in the fight, Clarke fearing that Lexa will be killed because of Roan's ability as a warrior. Lexa tells Clarke she must accept her fate, to which Clarke refuses to do before leaving the room.

Later Lexa is given knowledge that Nia possesses her own Nightblood, a girl named Ontari. Clarke tries again to persuade Lexa to have another warrior fight for her in the battle, but Lexa again refuses and is escorted to the battle area by Titus after telling Clarke that "this is goodbye, for now."

S3 episode 4 - Lexa

Lexa wins the fight

During her fight with Roan, Lexa manages the first shot after Roan attempts to attack her while her back is turned. The two trade blows until Roan manages to disarm Lexa and knock her down. Before he can unleash the finishing blow, Lexa moves out of the way of the spear and counters his attack. Getting to her feet she manages to disarm Roan, take his spear, and knock him to the ground. Instead of killing him, Lexa turns to the Ice Queen and throws the spear at her, killing her. She then crowns Roan King.

After the fight, Lexa goes to Clarke's room to thank her. Clarke changes the bandage on her hand and asks Lexa what will become of Ontari. Lexa tells her that Ontari will not be back until the Conclave after her death, to which Clarke pokes fun at Lexa for always talking about her death. They bid each other goodnight before going their separate ways.

In Hakeldama, Lexa and Clarke head to Arkadia with the body of the dead Ice Queen. Lexa assures Clarke that they bring their people peace before they stumble upon the field with the dead bodies of the peace army sent there. Indra is the only one spared and informs them that Sky People attacked them at night while they were sleeping. Lexa is angered and calls on the armies of the 12 clans to attack Arkadia and kill everyone in it. Clarke tries to convince Lexa to let her go to Arkadia so she can make things right, however, Lexa refuses. Clarke convinces her to use Indra's radio to contact Kane and he could meet them.

When Octavia arrives in Kane's place, she explains to Lexa that Pike was the new leader of Arkadia and that everything was different. Octavia also convinces Lexa to let her get Clarke into Arkadia as a means of trying to fix the situation.

Lexa is convinced by Clarke, after Clarke's failed attempt to get through to Bellamy, that they didn't have to take blood for the battle. As blood having blood only resulted in everyone's death. Convinced to try to be a better leader and show her people peace, Lexa agrees and say that blood will not have blood.

In Bitter Harvest, Clarke is drawing Lexa's sleeping form when Lexa wakes up from a nightmare, saying that the previous Commanders are angry about her decision to not attack the Sky People. She believes they are warning her about an assassin that will try to kill her and then start a war. Clarke tells her it was only a dream and to not worry about it. Lexa then discovers that Clarke had drawn her while she was sleeping. When Titus brings them the box with Carl Emerson inside, Lexa calls her guards to take him away when he attacks Clarke. Lexa also backs off when Clarke pushes her away after being helped up.

Later Lexa is arguing with Titus about the fate of the last Mountain Man. When Clarke says that Emerson should be killed, Lexa asks whether their "blood must not have blood" philosophy only applies when it's Lexa's people who bleed. Clarke tries to reason why Emerson should be killed but Lexa gives her until sunset to think it over.

During the ceremony, Lexa gives Clarke her knife to kill Emerson with. Clarke refuses to kill him at the last minute causing the ambassadors to stir. Lexa silences them and tells them that Wanheda was showing them a better way and that they should adapt to "blood must not have blood" in order to allow their people to thrive and grow without the fear of war and death.

In Thirteen, Lexa and the Nightbloods are celebrating Ascension Day in her throne room when Semet barges in. He has Octavia prisoner and claims that the Sky People have destroyed his village. He begs for his Commander to avenge them by killing all the Sky People. After discussing the situation with Titus and Clarke, Lexa decides to call upon the armies of the twelve clans and march on Arkadia, not to attack but to blockade them and allow the Sky People to take out their leaders from the inside. However, any Sky Person found past the blockade will be subject to a kill order. Semet attempts to assassinate Lexa out of rage, but Titus executes him first.

Lexa tells Clarke that despite the blockade, Clarke is welcome to stay in Polis with her. Titus is against this and warns Lexa that Clarke may end up with the same fate as Costia. This enrages Lexa and she assures him that she is more than capable of separating feelings from duty.

Thirteen 083

Lexa in bed with Clarke

Clarke, who has decided to return to her people, goes to say goodbye to Lexa and they end up having sex. Afterwards, they lie in bed and Clarke examines the tattoo on Lexa's back. Lexa explains that she got it on her Ascension Day, and the seven circles represent the seven Nightbloods who died. Clarke recalls that there were nine novitiates in Lexa's Conclave and asks what happened to "Number Eight". Lexa is reluctant to talk about it, and they begin to kiss again instead.

As Clarke prepares to leave, she is cornered in her room by Titus. He pulls out a gun and attempts to kill her. Clarke manages to dodge the bullets, but Lexa enters the room at that moment and is accidentally shot in the stomach by a stray bullet.

Clarke tries desperately to save Lexa, but she is losing too much blood. Lexa accepts her death and tells Clarke that her fight is over. Clarke refuses to give up at first, but eventually realizes there is nothing she can do to save Lexa. She tearfully recites the traveler's blessing and kisses Lexa for the last time. Lexa dies shortly after. Titus turns Lexa over on her back and surgically removes the Flame from her nape. He then carries her body away and announces that the Conclave is to begin now that Lexa is dead.

In Stealing Fire, Clarke grieves Lexa while the Conclave to choose Lexa's successor is about to take place. Aden reassures Clarke that Lexa made him and the other Nightbloods vow to support Clarke's people if they become the next Commander. Titus is also grief-stricken by Lexa's death and tells Clarke that he has served four Commanders as a Flamekeeper and none were half as wise or strong as Lexa.

Clarke wants to ensure that Aden wins the Conclave because he was Lexa's choice. When Ontari instead kills Aden and the other Nightblood children in their sleep, Clarke convinces Titus that this is not what Lexa would have wanted. Clarke realizes that the missing circle from Lexa's back tattoo means that there is another Nightblood out there. Titus confirms this to be the case and after helping Clarke escape with the Flame, he slits his own throat saying that this is "for Lexa."

In Nevermore, Raven, while under the control of A.L.I.E., uses Lexa's death to taunt Clarke. A distraught Clarke later begs Jasper not to destroy the Flame as it contains Lexa's consciousness. Clarke remembers seeing the Flame being removed from Lexa and realizes that she needs to remove the liquified chip from Raven in the same way in order to save Raven.

In Demons, Raven discovers that the Flame can be activated using a passphrase, though Becca's notebook doesn't reveal what it is. Raven realizes that the AI was in Lexa so Lexa must've known it, possibly a phrase that was important to her. Remembering Lexa often saying "blood must have blood," Clarke tries it without success. However, Sinclair is able to figure it out.

In Join or Die, Clarke informs Luna of Lexa's death. Clarke tells Luna that Lexa's spirit has chosen her to become the next Commander, and presents her with the Flame.

In Red Sky at Morning, Luna states that Lexa's death must have been difficult for Titus because she was his favorite. Luna realizes that Clarke cared for Lexa, and Clarke tells Luna that she can continue Lexa's legacy of peace if she takes the Flame and becomes the new Commander. Clarke attempts to force the Flame on Luna, but is easily taken out. Luna then reveals that she was matched against Lexa in the second round of their Conclave, but fled because she knew she would win against Lexa.

In Perverse Instantiation (Part 1), after her attempt to make Luna the new Commander fails, Clarke regards the Flame sadly and apologizes to it (a.k.a. Lexa).

The100 S3 Perverse Instantiation 2 Clarke & Lexa

Lexa reunites with Clarke in the City of Light

In Perverse Instantiation (Part 2), as Clarke, now wielding the Flame, attempts to make her way through the City of Light, she is rescued from being overwhelmed by Lexa whose consciousness Clarke subconsciously called out of the Flame to aid her. Clarke tells Lexa that she thought that she would never see her again, to which Lexa returns that she will always be with her and 'her fight is not over'. Lexa tells Clarke that they must move, and as they do, Clarke falls to the ground in pain. Moments later, things start to change within the City of Light, Lexa says that A.L.I.E is uploading version 2.0 of her code to the City of Light and soon, she'll completely take over. At that moment, Becca Pramheda gives the two a sign to follow — to find the kill switch — in the form of a girl riding a bicycle. Clarke and Lexa follow the girl, only to end up in a dead end, as there is a fence in their path, a firewall. The two try to find another way around but are ultimately trapped by A.L.I.E's forces. Raven helps them by coding a doorway, however, Lexa tells Clarke to go on ahead, and that she will always be with her. Clarke tells Lexa she loves her and goes to find the switch. Lexa charges at the men and kills many of them, buying Clarke the time she needs to reach and pull the kill switch, destroying A.L.I.E.

In Echoes, Abby notices Clarke's despondent expression as she gazes at the Flame. Clarke tearfully confesses to her mother that she loved Lexa, to which Abby replies that she already knew. Later, in an attempt to convince him to go to war, Echo tells Roan that the Azgeda war chiefs do not respect him because he lost to Lexa in their duel. Clarke, however, is able to prevent a war by giving Roan the Flame, thus convincing him of the impending Praimfaya and getting him to honor Lexa's Coalition, including the 13th clan.

In The Tinder Box, Roan accuses Clarke of only looking out for her own people. He tells her that she grieves for Lexa but has learned nothing from her, noting that Lexa was able to rise above her loyalty to Trikru.

406 Lexa drawing

A drawing of Lexa hung up in Clarke's room

In We Will Rise, Clarke is shown gazing sadly at the picture she drew of Lexa. Niylah tells Clarke that Lexa would be proud of her and that Lexa lives on through Clarke.

In God Complex, after his fight with Luna, Roan quips that he should have learned his lesson about fighting Nightbloods after Lexa. He goes on to tell Clarke that she was born to lead and that Lexa knew this.

In DNR, Indra states that a war between the clans is inevitable, and the only reason it did not happen before was because Lexa prevented it. Clarke tells the clan leaders that instead of going to war, all the clans can share the Second Dawn Bunker equally and that this is what Lexa would have wanted. Indra replies that since Lexa is not around anymore, there is no one to stop the clans from fighting.

In Eden, Clarke is going through the remains of the Polis tower and comes across Lexa's throne buried under a pile of rubble. She regards it sadly as she thinks of Lexa.[8] She pulls a piece of the throne out from the rubble but this causes the entire structure to collapse, nearly killing her.

In Sic Semper Tyrannis, Indra justifies making Madi, a child and Clarke's adopted daughter, the new Commander by revealing that Lexa was the same age when she ascended to the throne. Madi later recognizes the man sent by Octavia to kill her as Jorum, a Sangedakru warrior who had been loyal to Lexa, apparently channeling Lexa's memories of the man. Being reminded of his loyalty to Lexa causes Jorum to stop, but Clarke kills him anyway.

In The Warriors Will, Clarke decides not to remove the Flame from Madi because she cannot bring herself to destroy it, presumably because it contains Lexa's consciousness. Clarke then asks Madi if she sees Lexa in her Flame-induced dreams. Madi tells her that she knows that what happened to Lexa is why Clarke is scared of her becoming the Commander.

In Damocles (Part 1), Madi tells Clarke that all the Commanders in the Flame think that love is weakness, except Lexa. She goes on to say that every time she goes to sleep, she sees Lexa's betrayal of Clarke outside of Mount Weather. Clarke interprets it as Lexa showing Madi that she did the exact same thing to protect her people as Clarke is currently doing to protect Madi and states that she doesn't need ghosts interfering. Madi states that Lexa and the spirits of all of the other Commanders are real and Clarke is wrong about why Lexa is showing her that memory. For Lexa, her betrayal of Clarke is her deepest regret and she's showing it to Madi so that Clarke won't make that same mistake. Lexa's message drives Clarke to tears and helps to convince her to let Madi lead Wonkru.

In Red Sun Rising, Murphy brings up the night Lexa died while airing his grievances with Clarke.

In Memento Mori, a drawing of Lexa in bed from "Thirteen" is seen up close in Clarke's mindspace, accompanied by Lexa's voice.

607 Clarke Lexa drawing 1

A drawing of Lexa in Clarke's mindspace

In Nevermind, Clarke wakes up in her mindspace and is immediately drawn to a drawing of Lexa. She touches it and a flashback to Lexa is shown. Lexa's death, represented by her throne, is later shown among the objects in the room containing Clarke's most painful memories.[9] Josephine Lightbourne finds the room and taunts Clarke about her deepest traumas, noting that Clarke still cries when she thinks of Lexa. Later, when Clarke is drawing in her mindspace, sketches of Lexa are seen displayed by her bedside.

In The Blood of Sanctum, Sheidheda, possessing Madi, taunts Clarke, telling her that Lexa had said she was strong, but accuses Clarke of being as weak as Lexa due to her love.

Raven is later forced to delete the Flame to save Madi, though Sheidheda is uploaded to an unknown location. It is left unknown if Lexa and the other Commanders were uploaded as well or if their minds were deleted with the Flame.

In From the Ashes, Sheidheda is revealed to have uploaded himself into Russell Lightbourne's Mind Drive and manages to resurrect himself by killing the Prime and taking over his body. At the same time, Madi creates several drawings including one of Lexa's memories from "Ye Who Enter Here", things that she should have no memory of. Gaia believes that this means that Madi is experiencing the memories of one or all of the other Commanders, suggesting that their memories may have survived the destruction of the Flame as well.

In Welcome to Bardo, a very brief flashback of Lexa from "Hakeldama" is seen when Levitt is using the Memory Capture device to look through Octavia's memories.

In The Queen's Gambit, Murphy taunts Sheidheda by pointing out that the Grounders hate him but love Lexa because she united the clans. The Dark Commander angrily claims that he also united the clans and that both he and Lexa were killed by their Flamekeepers because they were afraid of their ideas.

In Blood Giant, following an aborted attempt at repairing the Flame, it is destroyed by Gabriel Santiago, destroying the minds of all the Commanders still inside.

In The Dying of the Light, when Levitt digs through the memories of the Commanders still inside of Madi, a flashback of Lexa from her time in the City of Light can be seen for a moment.

716 promo 15 Clarke judge

The Judge appears as Lexa

In The Last War, when Clarke takes the test to determine if humanity will transcend, the Judge takes on the form of Lexa because she was Clarke's greatest love. Clarke cannot resist hugging the Judge, despite knowing that it is not the real Lexa. When the Judge claims to be able to feel Clarke's pain, Clarke tells the Judge to feel the pain she felt when she was holding Lexa as she died. The Judge later appears to Clarke in Lexa's form on Earth to explain why she cannot transcend, but reveals that her friends have chosen not to transcend as well so that they can be with Clarke.

Personality[]

Lexa commands respect as the powerful leader of the Grounders. She is seen as a visionary and has a deep desire to do what's best for her people, even if it means going against their traditions. She has demonstrated a willingness to seek peaceful solutions and work with her enemies, such as letting the Ice Nation into her Coalition or showing mercy to the Sky People in the hopes of forming an alliance.

Lexa has a stoic and rather cynical personality; she often appears aloof and impassive, with rare outbursts of anger when provoked. She believes that to be a good leader, she must not let emotions affect her judgement. Among the Grounders, her readiness to make tough choices has earned her a reputation for ruthlessness. After Costia, the woman Lexa loved, was tortured and killed by the Ice Nation in an attempt to gain information on her, she decided to detach herself from people emotionally, believing love is a weakness she cannot afford to have.

Having been groomed to lead her people since she was a child, Lexa does not shy away from her role and responsibilities. She has a strong sense of duty and is loyal to her people to a fault. As a leader, Lexa is willing to do anything to ensure her people's safety. She is not above betraying her allies when it benefits her people, breaking deals with both Clarke and Roan for this reason.

Despite her emotional detachment, Lexa does have a soft spot for a select few such as the Nightblood children she trains. When among those she trusts, she is willing to show a more vulnerable side. She is shown to care deeply for the people she loves, valuing their opinions and putting their wellbeing before her own. Her love for Clarke, for example, extends to Clarke's people as well, so much so that Lexa made the young Nightbloods swear their loyalty to the thirteenth clan in the event that they become Commander.

Lexa not only had a violent childhood where she was expected to fight to the death, but she also carries a great deal of self-hatred due to the death of Costia and her betrayal to Clarke. These experiences lead her to have a very low self-image. Lexa see's herself as expendable despite being the commander of 12 clans, and doesn't seem to understand why Clarke is so adamant on her not dying. Even for a great warrior she was always quick to accept death in dangerous situations.

As revealed by Madi in "Damocles (Part 1)", Lexa's biggest regret is betraying Clarke in the Mount Weather War. Through her relationship with Clarke, she grows to believe that life should be about more than just surviving, and eventually no longer regards love as a weakness.

Physical Appearance[]

Lexa is very thin and petite, with a high forehead, full lips, lightly tanned skin, green eyes, and a youthful face. She also has long, wavy brown hair that she usually keeps in braids. Lexa wears tribal face paint on the battlefield or on ceremonial occasions, but is otherwise seen without it. She is rarely seen without the Commander's emblem on her forehead.

Relationships[]

Anya[]

Lexa was Anya's second (apprentice) before she became the Commander, and Anya has since become a high-ranking leader in Lexa's army. Lexa sends Tristan to take over Anya's unit when Anya fails to defeat the Delinquents, effectively demoting her. Even then, Anya shows concern for Lexa and wants to send her fastest rider to warn Lexa as soon as she is alerted of the presence of Reapers.

After escaping from Mount Weather with Clarke, Anya is confident that due to her past as Lexa's mentor, she can get an audience with Lexa to discuss working with the Sky People. In "Long Into an Abyss", Lexa begins trusting Clarke after learning that Clarke had been working together with Anya. Lexa is shown to care for Anya, such as wanting to know if Anya died well.

Gustus[]

"If you so much as look at her the wrong way, I will slit your throat."
- Gustus to Clarke about Lexa[src]

Lexa is Gustus' leader and Gustus is presumably her personal bodyguard and/or a high-ranking warrior from her clan. Gustus is very protective and holds high respect for Lexa. He pretends to be the Commander in "Fog of War" so that Lexa can gather information from the imprisoned Jaha and Kane.

Ultimately, it is Gustus' loyalty to Lexa that gets him killed. In "Remember Me", he tries to ruin the alliance between the Grounders and the Sky People so as to keep Lexa safe. When his sabotage is discovered, Lexa sentences him to Death by a Thousand Cuts. Gustus accepts his punishment and tells Lexa to "be strong" before she kills him.

Clarke notes in "Bodyguard of Lies" that Lexa cared for Gustus, despite pretending otherwise.

Marcus Kane[]

"I spent time with your Commander. She's a visionary."
- Kane to Lincoln about Lexa[src]
Lexa and Marcus Kane first meet when she has him imprisoned in "Fog of War". Lexa gains respect for Kane after learning that his desire for peace between their people is genuine. Following his imprisonment, they spend some time together and Kane comes to believe that Lexa is a visionary who would be open to negotiations between their people.

Clarke Griffin[]

Main article: Clarke and Lexa

Lexa and Clarke Griffin start off as enemies as Lexa's people and Clarke's people are at war for the entire first season and the first half of the second season. They officially meet in "Long Into an Abyss", when Clarke approaches Lexa in order to put aside their differences and create peace between their people.

The pair are shown to be alike in some ways, and they grow closer as they work to save their people from a common enemy. They share a mutual respect and the task of leadership over their allied clans, often making hard decisions together. They kiss in "Bodyguard of Lies"; however, Clarke tells Lexa that she is not ready for a relationship so soon after Finn's death under Lexa's orders. Their relationship becomes strained after "Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1)", when Lexa betrays the Sky People by retreating from Mount Weather in order to save her own people.

They reunite in the third season, when Lexa has Clarke brought to Polis. As Lexa works to bring peace to their people, Clarke forgives her and they become allies again and later lovers. Lexa's Flamekeeper, Titus, disapproves of their relationship and during an attempt to kill Clarke, shoots Lexa by accident instead. Despite Clarke's desperate attempts to save her, Lexa's physical body dies from her wound in "Thirteen". Because Lexa's consciousness is saved in the Flame, Clarke is able to summon Lexa to aid her in the City of Light in "Perverse Instantiation (Part 2)". Lexa protects Clarke from A.L.I.E.'s Cult, and Clarke declares her love for Lexa before they are forced to part ways once more.

Clarke continues to mourn Lexa long after her death. Josephine Lightbourne, for example, notes in "Nevermind" that Clarke still cries when she thinks of Lexa, six years since her death. Other characters also bring Lexa up in conversations with Clarke, sometimes to try to sway her opinion or to taunt her.

In the fifth season, Clarke's adopted daughter, Madi Griffin, is given the Flame and Lexa's consciousness is thus able to communicate with Madi. In "Damocles (Part 1)", Lexa tells Clarke, through Madi, that abandoning Clarke at Mount Weather is her biggest regret in an attempt to keep Clarke from making the same mistake. Lexa's message helps Clarke decide to do the right thing in the end, while also driving her to tears.

The series finale sees Clarke take a test to determine the fate of the human race. During the test, the Judge takes on the form of Lexa because she was Clarke's greatest love.

Costia[]

Lexa and Costia were lovers until Costia's death at the hands of the Ice Nation. In "Remember Me", Lexa tells Clarke that Costia was captured because Queen Nia believed that she knew Lexa's secrets. Because Costia belonged to Lexa, she was tortured and had her head cut off. Lexa claims to have gotten over the pain of her death by recognizing that love is weakness. However in "Bodyguard of Lies", Clarke accuses Lexa of still being haunted by Costia's death despite pretending otherwise.

In "Ye Who Enter Here", the Ice Nation ambassador references Costia's death to taunt Lexa about her "weakness" for Clarke. Lexa kills Queen Nia in "Watch the Thrones", uttering "jus drein jus daun" (blood must have blood) before she does so, hinting that this may have partly been punishment for Costia's death. When Titus comes to worry about Lexa's feelings for Clarke in "Thirteen", he reminds Lexa about what happened to Costia. Lexa is enraged and assures him that she can separate her feelings from her duty, noting that she still let the Ice Nation into her Coalition despite what they did to Costia.

Nia[]

"I want her head."
- Nia to Roan about Lexa[src]

Lexa and Queen Nia have a very hostile relationship. Before the Coalition was formed, the Woods Clan (Lexa's clan) and the Ice Nation (Nia's clan) were at war with each other. At some point, Nia had Lexa's lover, Costia, captured and tortured for information on Lexa. Costia was eventually killed, and her head was cut off and delivered to Lexa's bed. Despite this, Lexa still allowed the Ice Nation to join her Coalition under the condition that Nia's eldest son, Roan, was to be banished[7].

In "Ye Who Enter Here", Roan tells Clarke that if she assassinates Lexa, she will gain a grateful ally in Nia. Meanwhile, Nia plots with the Ambassadors of the 12 Clans to free her son and kill Lexa. Nia's plan to overthrow Lexa is revealed in "Watch the Thrones". Nia tells Clarke that her quarrel is with Lexa and that she is willing to keep the Sky People safe if they side with her against the Commander. Later in the episode, Lexa kills Nia by throwing a spear into her chest. Before throwing the spear, Lexa utters "jus drein jus daun" (blood must have blood), hinting that this may have partly been punishment for Costia's death.

Titus[]

"You're special, Heda. I've been the Fleimkepa for four Commanders. No one has done what you have."
- Titus to Lexa[src]

Titus is Lexa's Flamekeeper and teacher. He raised her when she was young, along with the other Nightblood children in Polis. According to Luna, Lexa was his favorite Nightblood.

Titus cares deeply for Lexa and holds her in extremely high regard. He tells Lexa in "Ye Who Enter Here" that she is special and has achieved more than any other Commander. In "Watch the Thrones", he tries to dissuade her from fighting Roan on her own. During the fight, he collapses onto his chair with worry when she looks to be losing, and is visibly relieved when she ends up beating Roan.

Titus disapproves of Lexa's relationship with Clarke, fearing that it will endanger her life and prevent her from fulfilling her duty to her people. Lexa disagrees but understands that Titus means well. In "Thirteen", he attempts to kill Clarke but accidentally shoots Lexa instead. A grief-stricken Titus begs the dying Lexa for forgiveness. He tells Clarke in "Stealing Fire" that of all the Commanders he has served, none were half as wise or strong as Lexa. After helping Clarke keep the Flame out of Ontari's hands, he slits his own throat saying that this is "for Lexa".

Aden[]

Aden is one of the Nightblood novitiates training to potentially succeed Lexa as the Commander one day. In "Ye Who Enter Here", Lexa and Aden are seen sparring during a training session. She praises him when he manages to block her attacks, then looks shock when he lands a hit on her. Lexa tells Titus that Aden is ready for the Conclave and admits that he is a better fighter than she was at his age.

Lexa introduces Clarke to Aden in "Watch the Thrones". She tells Clarke that Aden is her most promising novitiate and that he will likely succeed her should she die in her duel with Roan. Later that day, Aden is present during Lexa's fight and is visibly relieved when she wins.

After Lexa's death, Aden reassures Clarke in "Stealing Fire" that all the Nightbloods will honor their word to support the Sky People should one of them become Commander because they all loved Lexa. Clarke later asks Titus what they can do to make sure Aden wins the Conclave, noting that he was Lexa's choice. Titus replies that Lexa's spirit will choose Aden.

Luna[]

As Nightbloods, Lexa and Luna grew up together in Polis, training with their class of novitiates as potential successors to the Commander. After the previous Commander died, they were matched up to fight each other to the death in the second round of their Conclave. Luna tells Clarke in "Red Sky at Morning" that she fled before their fight so that she wouldn't have to kill Lexa.

In return, Titus tells Clarke in "Stealing Fire" that Lexa refused to let him hunt down and kill Luna.

Quotes[]

Thelonious Jaha: "What's your name?"
Lexa: "Lexa."
Thelonious Jaha: "Lexa, I'm Thelonious and this is Marcus. Your Commander spoke of an assassin in the village?"
Lexa: "Yes, eighteen of our people were murdered. Elders, children."
Marcus Kane: "We had nothing to do with it."
Lexa: "It doesn't matter, the Commander thinks you did. One of you must pick up the knife, that is our way."
Thelonious Jaha: "And if we refuse?"
Lexa: "Then the Commander will use it to slit both of your throats."
-- in Fog of War
Thelonious Jaha (holding Lexa hostage): "Take off these chains."
Marcus Kane: "Please she's just an innocent girl."
Lexa (to Gustus): "He made his choice, this one's mine. (takes down Jaha) I've heard what I need to hear."
Gustus: "Yes, Heda."
Marcus Kane: "You're the Commander?"
Lexa: "I've learned much about you. Your intentions are honorable, your desire for peace is true. Free him. Later we will talk, in the meantime, your friend will be used to send a message." (Lexa's guards beat up Jaha)
Marcus Kane: "No! No, please stop! Stop, please!"
Lexa: "The massacre must be answered. Blood must have blood."
-- in Fog of War
Lexa (to Clarke): "You're the one who burned three hundred of my warriors alive."
-- in Long Into an Abyss
Lexa (to Clarke): "I just need one thing in return. Deliver me the one you call 'Finn.' Our truce begins with his death."
-- in Long Into an Abyss
Marcus Kane: "I spent time with your Commander. She's a visionary."
Lincoln: "And that's why you're all still alive. If it were up to some at her table, you wouldn't be."
-- in Spacewalker
Clarke Griffin: "Show my people how powerful you are. Show them you can be merciful. Show them you're not a savage."
Lexa: "We are what we are."
-- in Spacewalker
Clarke Griffin (about Finn): "He did it for me. He did it for me."
Lexa: "Then he dies for you."
-- in Spacewalker
Lexa (to Clarke, about killing Finn): "What you did tonight will haunt you until the end of your days."
-- in Remember Me
Marcus Kane: "Peace with the Grounders is the only way we'll survive."
Abigail Griffin: "Oh I don't think they know what peace is."
Marcus Kane: "The Commander does."
Abigail Griffin: "She's a child! They're being led by a child."
-- in Remember Me
Lexa (to the villagers of Tondc): "The Sky People march with us now."
-- in Remember Me
Lexa: "I lost someone special to me, too. Her name was Costia. She was captured by the Ice Nation, whose queen believed she knew my secrets. Because she was mine, they tortured her, killed her, cut off her head."
Clarke Griffin: "I'm sorry."
Lexa: "I thought I'd never get over the pain, but I did."
Clarke Griffin: "How?"
Lexa: "By recognizing it for what it is-- weakness."
Clarke Griffin: "What is? Love? So you just stopped caring about everyone? I could never do that."
Lexa: "Then you put the people you care about in danger and the pain will never go away. The dead are gone, Clarke. The living are hungry."
-- in Remember Me
Lexa (to Clarke): "Tonight, we celebrate our newfound peace. Tomorrow, we plan our war."
-- in Remember Me
Lexa: "Tell me something, Clarke. When you plunged the knife into the heart of the boy you loved, did you not wish that it was mine?"
-- in Remember Me
Indra (to the Sky People delegation): "I argued for all of you to die, but the Commander is merciful. She wants only one."
-- in Remember Me
Lexa (to Quint): "Yu gonplei ste odon." (Your fight is over.)
-- in Survival of the Fittest
Lexa: "You should've left me behind. Now two will die here instead of one."
Clarke Griffin: "I'm still new to your culture but when someone saves your life, my people say thank you."
Lexa: "I'm serious Clarke, to lead well you must mark hard choices."
Clarke Griffin: "Hard choices? You're telling me that."
Lexa: "I've seen your strength, it's true, but now you waver. You couldn't kill Quint, you couldn't leave me to die. That was weakness."
Clarke Griffin: "I thought love was weakness."
Lexa: "Mockery is not the product of a strong mind, Clarke."
Clarke Griffin: "You wanna know why I saved you? Because I need you. God forbid one of your Generals becomes Commander. You may be heartless, Lexa, but at least you're smart."
Lexa: "Don't worry, my spirit will choose much more wisely than that."
Clarke Griffin: "Your spirit?"
Lexa: "When I die, my spirit will find the next Commander."
-- in Survival of the Fittest
Lexa (to Clarke): "I was wrong about you, Clarke. Your heart shows no sign of weakness."
-- in Survival of the Fittest
Lexa (to Clarke): "This is war, Clarke. People die. You showed your true strength today. Don't let emotions stop you now."
-- in Rubicon
Lexa (to Clarke): "Victory stands on the back of sacrifice. You know that."
-- in Resurrection
Lexa (to Clarke): "We do what we must to survive. The enemy does the same. It's not personal."
-- in Resurrection
Lexa (to the villagers of Tondc): "What happened here will not stand. The mountain will fall. The dead will be avenged."
-- in Resurrection
Lexa (to Clarke): "That's what it means to be a leader, Clarke. The truth is, we must look into the eyes of our warriors and say, 'Go die for me.'"
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
Lexa (about Octavia): "Frag em op." (Kill her.)
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
Clarke Griffin: "What the hell is wrong with you? You can't just kill everyone you don't trust."
Lexa: "Yes, I can."
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
Lexa: "You think our ways are harsh, but that's how we survive."
Clarke Griffin: "Maybe life should be about more than just surviving. Don't we deserve better than that?"
Lexa: "Maybe we do."
-- in Bodyguard of Lies
Lexa (to her warriors): "The mountain has cast a shadow over these woods for too long. They've hunted us, controlled us, turned us into monsters. That ends today. Thanks to our alliance with the Sky People, the mountain will fall. As Clarke said, we spare the innocent. As for the guilty . . . jus drein jus daun (blood must have blood)."
-- in Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1)
Clarke Griffin (about the Sky People): "They'll all be killed, but you don't care about that, do you?"
Lexa: "I do care, Clarke, but I made this choice with my head and not my heart. The duty to protect my people comes first."
-- in Blood Must Have Blood (Part 1)

Lexa (to Roan): "I'll honor our deal when your Queen honors my Coalition."
-- in Wanheda (Part 2)
Titus: "Azgeda will bow before your Commander."
Ice Nation ambassador: "The Commander should bow before Azgeda. We know not to make treaties with our enemies."
Titus: "The Commander bows before no one."
Lexa: "Stand down, Titus."
Ice Nation ambassador: "She even prefers the enemy's language."
Lexa: "And you will use it too, in honor of our guests this evening. Now, sit. We have more important matters to discuss."
Ice Nation ambassador: "Yes, we do. For example, why is Wanheda still alive? If this is your weakness again, Azgeda will happily step in."
-- in Ye Who Enter Here
Lexa (after killing the Ice Nation ambassador): "Would anyone else care to question my decisions? Good. Then let's begin."
-- in Ye Who Enter Here
Lexa: "You still think the summit is a bad idea."
Titus: "You mean well, Heda. But now is not the time for good intentions. Your enemies are circling. Queen Nia moves against you. Our focus should be there. Instead, you antagonize her further by offering the Skaikru a seat at your table."
Lexa: "I will not let the fear of war dictate our agenda."
Titus: "Why are you doing this? Sky People are here to negotiate a treaty, not join the Coalition. They didn't ask for this. Not one of the twelve clans will accept it."
Lexa: "They will accept it when they see Wanheda bow before me."
Titus: "She won't even see you, yet everything you do elevates her. Why?"
Lexa: "Clarke elevates herself. She's special."
Titus: "You're special, Heda. I've been the Fleimkepa for four Commanders. No one has done what you have. We are so close to our goal. If you want the power of Wanheda, you know what must be done. You strike her down. Kill her. Take her power."
-- in Ye Who Enter Here
Lexa (to Clarke): "I'm sorry. I never meant to turn you into this."
-- in Ye Who Enter Here
Lexa: "Hail, warriors of the twelve clans."
Grounders: "Hail, Commander of the Blood."
-- in Ye Who Enter Here
Nia: "She won't take our heads because she knows our armies will retaliate. None of us here wants war."
Lexa: "We both know what you want, Nia. If you think me unfit to command, issue the challenge and let's get on with it."
Nia: "Very well. You are challenged."
Lexa: "And I accept your challenge."
-- in Watch the Thrones
Titus: "Heda, who will fight for you?"
Lexa: "Ai laik Heda. Non na throu daun gon ai." (I'm the Commander. No one fights for me.)
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa: "Chit bilaik thri bakon kom hedplei?" (What are the three pillars of being a Commander?)
Nightblood #1: "Noun." (Wisdom.)
Nightblood #2: "Fiyanes." (Compassion.)
Nightblood #3: "En uf." (And strength.)
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa (to the Nightbloods): "Lev yo op meija en mema yo in: Yo gada yo rein in kom yo Sheidjus." (Train hard and remember: You are each worthy of your Nightblood.)
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa (to Clarke): "I have to do this on my own and you have to let me."
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa (about Nia): "Jus drein jus daun." (Blood must have blood.)
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa (to the crowd): "The Queen is dead. Long live the King."
-- in Watch the Thrones
Lexa: "Indra, our people act as if war is easier than peace. If that's so, should we not try and achieve the more difficult goal?"
Indra: "Polis will not support you. Titus-"
Lexa: "Titus is my subject! They're all my subjects. Do you say they will defy me? Will you defy me?"
Indra: "No, Heda. I will not."
Lexa: "Then let it be known. Blood must not have blood."
-- in Hakeldama
Clarke: "Hey, hey, it's okay, you're okay. What were you dreaming about?"
Lexa: "Commanders before me, they speak to me in my sleep. I saw their deaths at war, at the hands of an assassin."
Clarke: "It was just a nightmare."
Lexa: "No. No, it's a warning. They think I'm betraying their legacy. 'Jus drein jus daun' (blood must have blood) has always, always been the way of our people."
Clarke: "Listen to me. A ceasefire is not a betrayal. What you did on that battlefield stopped a war. Your legacy will be peace."
-- in Bitter Harvest
Lexa (to Clarke): "So 'blood must not have blood' applies only when it is my people who bleed?"
-- in Bitter Harvest
Lexa (to the crowd): "We come together tonight, as we have countless times before, to watch a man die."
-- in Bitter Harvest
Titus (about Emerson): "This man must die. If Skaikru will not take his life then Heda will!"
Lexa: "Heda will speak for herself."
-- in Bitter Harvest
Lexa (to the crowd): "Silence! The crimes of the mountain cannot be answered by one man. Wanheda knows this. Her actions show us a promise for a new future. A world in which violence does not always answer violence. A world in which our children can flourish without the shadow of death. This prisoner is banished from my land. He will live, but he will live with the ghosts of those he has lost. Haunted until the end of his days by the knowledge that he is the last of his kind."
-- in Bitter Harvest
Semet: "Heda, I do not understand, how is this vengeance?"
Lexa: "That is not vengeance, my brother. It is justice."
-- in Thirteen
Titus: "On this sacred day, I beg you to remember my teachings. Love is weakness. To be Commander is to be alone."
Lexa: "I will not hear this again."
Titus: "Yes, you will! Your feelings for Clarke put both of you in danger. Your kill order must be fully enforced. If you care for Clarke, you will send her home. It is the only way she will be safe. Don't make her pay the price for your mistakes as Costia did."
Lexa: "My mistakes? Azgeda cut off Costia's head and delivered it to my bed, and still I let them into my alliance! I am more than capable of separating feelings from duty!"
-- in Thirteen
Lexa (to Clarke): "Ai gonplei ste odon." (My fight is over.)
-- in Thirteen
Lexa: "You were right, Clarke. Life is about more than just surviving."
-- in Thirteen
Aden (to Clarke, about supporting the Sky People): "Lexa made each of us vow it. We loved her."
-- in Stealing Fire
Titus (to Clarke and Murphy): "I've served four Commanders as Fleimkepa, none of them half as wise or strong as Lexa kom Trikru. The truth is, she was all those things even before Ascension."
-- in Stealing Fire
Luna (about Titus): "Lexa's death must have been hard for him. She was his favorite. You cared for her."
Clarke Griffin: "Yes. Lexa was special. She was working toward peace. Blood must not have blood. You can finish what she started."
-- in Red Sky at Morning
Lexa (to Clarke): "Our fight is not over."
-- in Perverse Instantiation (Part 2)

Abigail Griffin (as Clarke gazes sadly at the Flame): "I know that look."
Clarke Griffin (crying): "I loved her, Mom."
Abigail Griffin: "I know."
-- in Echoes
Roan: "Until another ascends, Azgeda honors and will defend the Coalition of the last true Commander, Lexa kom Trikru, including the thirteenth clan."
-- in Echoes
Roan (to Clarke): "You grieve for Lexa, yet you've learned nothing from her. She was Trikru, but she rose above loyalty to clan."
-- in The Tinder Box
Niylah (to Clarke): "Lexa would be proud of you. We're all your people now. She believed that, too. She lives on through you."
-- in We Will Rise
Clarke Griffin (to the clan leaders): "There is room for 1,200 people in here. We could share it equally. All of the clans can survive. That's what Lexa would have wanted."
-- in DNR

Indra (about Madi): "She's the same age Lexa was when she ascended."
-- in Sic Semper Tyrannis
Madi Griffin: "Every time I close my eyes, I see you outside the door at Mount Weather, ready for war and then I walk away, leaving you there alone."
Clarke Griffin: "Let me translate that for you. Lexa protected her people by making a deal with the enemy, leaving Skaikru to die, yes, just like I've done here. I don't need ghosts telling me what I've lost to protect you, Madi."
Madi Griffin: "Clarke, she's not a ghost. She's real. They all are and you're wrong about why she's showing me that memory. Betraying you is her deepest regret. She's showing me that because she doesn't want you to make the same mistake she did. Please, Clarke. I know you're scared. I am too. But I have to do this and you have to let me."
Clarke Griffin: "Oh Madi, this is how we survive."
Madi Griffin: "It may be, but life should be about more than just surviving."
-- in Damocles (Part 1)

John Murphy (to Sheidheda): "Then there's the whole Lexa thing. Knowing that she is everybody's favorite when they hated you. Then again, she did unite the clans."
-- in The Queen's Gambit

Notes and Trivia[]

  • The character was named after Alexandria, a city in Virginia, close to Washington, D.C.[10]
    • While naming Lexa, they tried many variations of "Alexandria" including Alexa, Andria, and Xandria.[11]
    • New characters often have temporary names in the writers room. Lexa's was Rosslyn, after a neighborhood in Virginia.[12]
  • The reason Lexa's hair was covered when she first appears is because her braids were so intricate that she'd need to have help with them,[13] which would defeat the purpose of her disguise from Kane and Jaha.
  • Lexa is a few years older than Clarke,[14] although Alycia Debnam-Carey, who plays Lexa, is a few years younger than Eliza Taylor, who plays Clarke.
  • When creating her character, Lexa was originally imagined as a child around ten or so, but the idea was scrapped due to restrictions on working with children.[15]
    • This original character concept was used for Madi, her successor, in Season Five.
  • When Lexa told the Ice Nation Ambassador "I have a message for Queen Nia", she not only killed him to show that she's not weak, but to send a clear message to Azgeda that Trikru and the other clans will not go down without a fight and will never surrender to Queen Nia.
  • Lexa is the first Commander to have dominion over all 12 Grounder Clans,[5][6] unifying them under her Coalition.
    • Lexa is the highest ranking Grounder as the Commander of the 12 Clans.
    • After inducting the Sky People as the thirteenth clan of her Coalition, she becomes the first Commander to have jurisdiction over the Sky People.
    • Lexa has been the Commander for at least three wars: one with the Ice Nation, one with the Sky People, and one with Mount Weather.
    • Titus states that he served four Commanders before Lexa, making Lexa the fifth Commander he has served.
  • She was the only true Commander to lead the Coalition in the former eastern United States. Ontari, her direct successor, was never in possession of the Flame and by the time Madi, her true successor, bore the Flame, the Coalition had already been succeeded by Wonkru.
  • If the Ascension Day Lexa was celebrating in "Thirteen" was her own, that would mean her reign as Commander started and ended on the same day years apart.
  • Lexa was the first character revealed to be LGBT+.
    • Lexa's death sparked outrage due to her being one of the most recent of a string of copious LGBT+ character deaths on TV shows.
    • TVLine ranked Lexa's death as the most heartbreaking death of the entire series.[16]
    • Jason Rothenberg cited Lexa's death as his biggest regret of the entire series.[17]
    • Although it hasn’t been confirmed, fans say that Lexa’s birthday is July 1, 2128
