“ | I lost someone special to me, too. Her name was Costia. She was captured by the Ice Nation, whose queen believed she knew my secrets. Because she was mine they tortured her, killed her, cut off her head. | ” |
— Lexa to Clarke [src] |
Costia was a Grounder from the Trikru clan and Lexa's girlfriend until her death at the hands of Queen Nia of Azgeda.
Costia was first mentioned in "Remember Me", when Lexa told a grieving Clarke of her own past love. Her death significantly impacted Lexa's views on love and emotions, and shaped how she ruled over her people.
Early Life[]
Little is known about Costia's early life except that she met, befriended, and eventually fell in love with Lexa at some point before Costia was captured, tortured by Queen Nia of Azgeda and later had her head cut off.
Throughout the Series[]
In Remember Me, Lexa tells Clarke about Costia after the funeral for the massacred victims of Tondc and Finn Collins. Lexa mentions that she loved someone by the name of Costia and the Ice Nation Queen kidnapped her, tortured her, and cut off her head because they thought that she knew Lexa's secrets and because she was hers. Lexa claims to have gotten over the pain of Costia's death by recognizing that love is weakness.
In Bodyguard of Lies, Clarke tells Lexa that she is weak for hiding from her feelings and accuses her of still being haunted by Costia's death.
In Ye Who Enter Here, the Ice Nation ambassador tells Lexa that if her weakness is preventing her from killing Clarke, the Ice Nation would gladly step in again, referring to the Ice Nation's capture and murder of Costia.
In Watch the Thrones, Lexa kills Queen Nia in retribution for the destruction of Mount Weather and for challenging Lexa's throne. Though not directly mentioned, Nia's death also avenges Costia.
In Thirteen, Titus tries to convince Lexa to send Clarke back to Arkadia by reminding Lexa that her relationship with Costia ended up costing Costia her life. Lexa is enraged and assures Titus that she can separate her feelings from her duty, recalling that even though the Ice Nation cut off Costia's head and delivered it to her bed, she still let them into her alliance.
